The U.S. Administration Has Never Been This Close to Recognizing the Armenian Genocide, Says Sargsyan
International expert Suren Sargsyan posted on his Facebook page an entry titled “Biden and the Recognition of the Genocide: The Armenian Community vs. the Armenian Authorities.” He particularly emphasized that the Armenian community in the U.S. has allies within Biden's large political team, from legislators to executives, who are lobbying and, some would say, exerting pressure on the White House.
“I cannot assert that Biden will recognize the Genocide. But I can clearly say that never in U.S. history has there been an administration this close to recognition. The community is making tremendous efforts in this direction with the current administration. The Armenian community has allies within Biden's large political team, from legislators to executives, who are lobbying and, indeed, exerting pressure on the White House.
In contrast, the Armenian authorities are pursuing a reverse process. First, the Secretary of the Security Council, then the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, and subsequently the next ambassador of Armenia to Washington (which is the most dangerous) announce reconciliation with Turkey. Turkey is doing the same, as the recognition process could be halted if the parties start negotiations.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there are no official negotiations, but there is probably some ‘2nd track diplomacy’ or even ‘1.5 track diplomacy’ that is being kept secret from the public (and perhaps even from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs). Unfortunately, the efforts of the Armenian community are being countered by Turkey and the Armenian authorities.
