Karen Avagyan Crowned European Weightlifting Champion

In the ongoing European Weightlifting Championship in Moscow, Armenia has its first champion. Competing in the 89 kg weight class, Karen Avagyan proved unbeatable. Another athlete representing Armenia in that weight class, Andranik Karapetyan, secured a bronze medal at the championship.

Karen Avagyan successfully lifted a barbell weighing 175 kilograms in the snatch event and 200 kg in the clean and jerk, making a total lift of 375 kg to become the champion of the continent.

Georgian weightlifter Revaz Davitadze was the European runner-up with a total lift of 374 kg. Andranik Karapetyan managed to lift 170 kg in the snatch and settled for 195 kg in the clean and jerk. With a total lift of 365 kg, the 2016 European champion claimed a bronze medal in 2021.

Tomorrow, on April 9, 96 kg weight class athletes Hakob Mkrtchyan (2019 European champion) and Davit Hovhannisyan will take to the stage, along with Lianna Gyurjyan competing in the women’s 81 kg weight class.
