Revising Turkey's Approach Could Serve as Ground for Armenia to Consider Normalizing Relations: Makunts
One of the key responsibilities of every government official is to do their utmost to strengthen our state while preserving national identity and memory. I believe that it is the mission of each official to harmoniously combine these two approaches.
This was stated by Lilit Makunts, the leader of the "My Step" faction, in a conversation with reporters regarding various officials' remarks that there needs to be a change in the approach towards relations with Turkey.
Makunts emphasized that no official has expressed a friendly stance towards Turkey. Answering a question on how she envisions Armenian-Turkish relations in the post-war period, Makunts said, “Until recently, Turkey has clearly shown that it has an unfriendly or hostile attitude towards Armenia and the Armenian people. I believe that even small steps towards revising Turkey's approach could serve as a basis for Armenia to consider normalizing relations.”
According to Makunts, all the statements made are in the context of regional transformations and changes. “As public officials, we are obliged to take these into account and reorient ourselves accordingly. This is by no means the interpretation that has been voiced. I want to emphasize again that preserving national identity and historical memory is the mission of each of us,” said Lilit Makunts.
