Major Electoral System Change: Armenian Parliament Adopts New Electoral Code
The National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia has recently adopted in its second reading the draft law on amendments and additions to the Electoral Code of the Republic of Armenia. The initiative was authored by MPs Arman Babajanyan, Sergey Bagratyan, Vahagn Hovakimyan, and Hamazasp Danielyan.
The draft was approved with 82 votes. It stipulates that elections will be conducted solely through a proportional representation system, eliminating the previously used rating voting method.
The opposition has refused to participate in the vote for this bill. According to Edmon Maroukian, the leader of the “Enlightened Armenia” faction, this change deprives citizens of their right to choose their representatives.
