Video: The Bodies of Brothers Discovered Side by Side - They Fought Together and Died Together
Gevorg and Karen Gevorgyan were born in the village of Khanzhyan in the Armavir region. The elder brother was Gevorg. He served in the police forces since 2015, was married, and had one daughter.
The younger brother, Karen, was born in 1998 and was studying at the Armenian State University of Economics. He had been serving in the police forces since 2019.
On September 29, 2020, Gevorg and Karen Gevorgyan went to Artsakh. For about a month, they participated in the defense of Karvachar. Karen had completed his mandatory military service in Karvachar, which helped him and his comrades quickly and accurately navigate the terrain.
On October 29, the brothers returned home, continuing their service in the police regiment in Yerevan.
“On November 1, they came home from the regiment after a meeting. They said they were going back to Artsakh early in the morning. I was not aware that the command had called one of my sons. I asked Gevorg not to go. I said, 'You have a family and a child.' He replied, 'It’s our duty; we have to go,'” recounts their mother, Arevik Mikaelyan.
Although one of the brothers was supposed to go to Artsakh, they left together on November 2, this time to participate in the defensive battles for Shushi.
One of the police force units fell into enemy encirclement, where Karen Gevorgyan was also located. Karen was wounded while trapped.
“Even while injured, Karen continued to fight. Gevorg was far from Karen. The command and his comrades did not allow him to go help Karen, saying he would die because Karen was already near the Turks. However, Gevorg did not obey, went, and reached his brother,” says their mother, restraining her emotions.
Gevorg reached his brother, and together they continued to fight. In the encirclement, Gevorg sustained a more severe injury. Days later, the bodies of the brothers were found side by side. They fought together and died together...
The only light in the Gevorgyan home is Gevorg Gevorgyan's daughter, 1.5-year-old Arevik. She shows guests pictures of her father and uncle. Arevik's maternal grandfather died in the First Nagorno-Karabakh War in Shushi, and her father died in the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War, again in Shushi. Arevik is the legacy of heroes. And the spirit of heroes never dies.
