LHK Will Not Sign Agreement With Authorities on Snap Elections
Edmon Marukyan, the leader of the "Bright Armenia" party, said in a conversation with journalists today that the solution proposed by LHK to exit the political crisis has been rejected by the authorities.
“Our outstretched hand has been left unanswered; at this moment, our proposal loses its relevance and is premature,” said Mr. Marukyan.
Describing the situation, he recalled that the President of Armenia has appealed to the Constitutional Court, challenging the provisions of the laws concerning the appointment and dismissal of the Chief of the General Staff, seeing it as a constitutional issue, and now the ball is in the court of the Constitutional Court.
“Because when the Constitutional Court accepts the case for consideration, it can suspend the decree or the legal force of the Prime Minister’s statement until the matter of constitutionality of the mentioned legal provisions is resolved. Therefore, the Constitutional Court can now decide that Onik Gasparyan continues to serve in his position. We have to wait and see whether it will decide or not,” he added.
Mr. Marukyan emphasized that Onik Gasparyan has stated that the homeland-worthy solution to the existing crisis can only be ensured through the resignation of the Prime Minister and snap parliamentary elections. “This has been our ongoing argument—that the parliament should be dissolved, which can happen with the resignation of the Prime Minister. Our proposal has been rejected. However, the agenda of snap elections will continue to be the number one agenda in the Republic of Armenia, as the Armed Forces have fully joined that agenda, and the announcement has been supported by the officer corps. It is interesting to see what those people who defended Onik Gasparyan but opposed snap elections will say,” he concluded.
