VIDEO: Armenian Catholic Church in Baghdad Prepares to Welcome Pope
The visit of Pope Francis has sparked concerns among health professionals. Dozens of Christians have arrived at the Armenian Catholic Church in Baghdad to welcome Pope Francis, according to PA Media. This will be the Pope's first visit to the country.
Men, women, and children gathered on Friday morning at the Holy Virgin Armenian Catholic Church. PA Media reports, “The Pope’s visit has created panic among health care professionals, who fear that many people will gather for the meeting with the Pope.”
Francis breaks a year-long isolation to draw attention to marginalized people, primarily the northern Christian communities that have been devastated during the Islamic State's brutal rule from 2014 to 2017. For the Pope, who often visits places where Christians are a persecuted minority, Iraqi Christians embody the 'Church of Martyrs,' which he has admired since his desire to become a Jesuit missionary in Asia.
In Iraq, Francis aims not only to honor the memory of his martyrs but also to convey a message of peace and brotherhood.
