Why the National Assembly Did Not Elect a Supreme Court Judge

Today, the National Assembly did not elect a Supreme Court judge through a closed and secret ballot. The head of the counting committee, Vahagn Hovakimyan, reported that 36 members participated in the voting process, with 8 of the ballots deemed invalid.

Thus, candidate Armen Haykyants received 13 votes, Arsen Mkrtchyan received 15 votes, while Samvel Grigoryan received 0 votes. It is noteworthy that on the day of the discussion in the National Assembly, Samvel Grigoryan had announced his withdrawal from candidacy.

National Assembly President Ararat Mirzoyan stated that according to the Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly, a Supreme Court judge is elected by at least 3/5 of the total votes from the deputies, and therefore the decision was not accepted.
