It Turns Out, the Vicious Practice Previously Used is Now Being Reapplied — MP

This draft law contains a number of risks and violations of laws, including constitutional violations, which we cannot ignore. This was stated by independent MP Tatev Tovmasyan during the discussion of the draft law on 'Education and Science.'

“Unfortunately, previous authorities brought in a council president, a chieftain, who could dictate the agenda at the university, appoint rectors and pro-rectors,” Tovmasyan quoted a part of the Minister of Education’s speech, referring to the politicization of higher education institutions and the restriction of academic freedoms. She continued, “So what is happening now? Are we replacing one chieftain with another? It turns out, the vicious practice that used to be implemented is now being renewed.”

In the opinion of the MP, these principles should be completely excluded in post-revolutionary Armenia. “The fact that you have not succeeded in appointing a rector to Yerevan State University during this time, including yourself, Mr. Minister, although the government has expressed this desire numerous times, but you became a minister out of 'sorrow' and now want to have pocket rectors?” the MP stated, deeming all of this unacceptable.
