Grades for Students Will Be Given Only from the 2nd Semester of the 5th Grade

The government approved the procedure for the formation and approval of the new state standard of general education at its meeting today, February 4. Deputy Minister of Education and Science Zhanna Andreasyan stated that this procedure regulates the processes of formation and approval of the state standards of general education and subject programs and standards, as well as the relationships related to their implementation in the Armenian general education system.

According to her, the new state standard of general education transitions from a subject-centered approach to an integrated approach, which allows seeing various connections, distinguishing intersecting ideas, and understanding through each individual subject how we achieve overall outcomes. 'This reduces the burden on students without reducing the content volume. It allows schools to demonstrate creative, flexible policies, as schools will have the opportunity to shape their own approaches based on a legal plan,' stated the deputy minister.

She noted that modular education will promote high school, enabling the possibility of having short-term courses at the higher stages, rather than sticking to one year. 'The introduction of project-based learning starting from the 7th grade is very important as it will allow developing the creative and independent capabilities of the learner. All these changes also come with a change in the grading system. Specifically, the point-based assessment will be implemented from the 2nd semester of the 5th grade, meaning we are abandoning the point-based grading system in elementary grades. We also proposed to abandon the failing grade threshold and consider all points in a 10-point scale as progress,' said Zhanna Andreasyan.
