The ‘My Step’ Faction is Acting Against Freedom of Speech: Media Defender

The ‘My Step’ faction has proposed amendments to the law on mass media. They aim to prohibit citing anonymous sources. According to the proposed amendments, this requirement will also extend to online media.

The ‘Media Defender’ initiative states that this is yet another step against freedom of speech. Representatives of the legislative body from the ruling party are violating Article 5, Paragraph 1 of the law on mass media of the Republic of Armenia, which stipulates that journalists and media operators are not obliged to disclose the source of information, except in cases specified in Paragraph 2 of the same article.

The ‘Media Defender’ initiative has repeatedly recorded and raised awareness about attempts by the government to suppress media and free speech. This incident is no exception, and we call on the journalistic community to unite against such laws.
