Sargsyan: Armenian-Russian, Armenian-American, Armenian-Chinese Relations Have Collapsed in the Last 3 Years
International relations expert Suren Sargsyan has made a post on Facebook titled "Failed Armenian-Chinese Relations," addressing Armenia's foreign policy. The post is as follows:
“The last 2.5-3 years have been marked by a total collapse of foreign policy. Both Armenian-Russian strategic and Armenian-American as well as Armenian-Chinese friendly relations have fallen apart.
Armenian-Chinese relations have always been at a high level. Both sides consistently emphasized that Armenia and China share similar or identical positions on various international issues. This was indeed a serious and exceptional formulation.
Unfortunately, due to several serious shortcomings of the Armenian authorities in recent years, a different attitude has formed towards us.
- In May 2019, the Prime Minister visited China. As a result of high-level meetings, several agreements were reached (including regarding the "Belt and Road" initiative), but due to the inconsistency and amateurism of the authorities, these were not implemented. Naturally, the Chinese side drew conclusions.
- In 2019, Taiwan's Minister of Economic Affairs visited Armenia. Meanwhile, we have signed a declaration with China, according to which Armenia is obliged not to establish any official relations with Taiwan. Naturally, there were denials/explanations/oaths, but the Chinese side had already made conclusions.
- In 2019, Armenia joined the International Alliance for Religious Freedom. It is a movement that has a distinctly anti-Chinese nature, which the Trump administration did not even hide. The Armenian side tried to justify the “unjustifiable.” No serious argument was brought forward as to how joining this movement aligns with Armenia's interests. The Chinese side drew their conclusions.
After all this, are you still surprised by China’s position in the UN Security Council?”
