National Assembly Approves Draft Law for Creation of Anti-Corruption Committee

The National Assembly has approved in the first reading the draft law for the establishment of an Anti-Corruption Committee presented by the government, along with a package of related laws. The draft was passed with a vote of 84 in favor, 16 against, and 4 abstentions.

It is noteworthy that the package of proposals includes the establishment of a new investigative body—the Anti-Corruption Committee—whose main competency will be to organize and carry out judicial criminal proceedings for alleged corrupt crimes under the authority of Armenia’s Criminal Procedure Code.

The professional staff of the Committee will be supplemented by engaging personnel who have undergone appropriate professional training. Moreover, the transfer of positions and tools for investigators dealing with corruption crimes will not be mechanical in nature. Appointments to the Anti-Corruption Committee, including its leadership, will be made as a result of an open competition.

The draft also establishes regulations aimed at ensuring the transparency and accountability of the Committee's activities.
