What Plans Do Azerbaijan and Turkey Have? 'Kommersant' Publishes a Map
According to the Russian publication 'Kommersant', a new section of the railway will be built from Sharur (Nakhchivan) to Igdir (Turkey). This means that the connection between Turkey and Azerbaijan will be established without using the already existing railway from Gyumri (Armenia) to Kars (Turkey), which is also connected to Nakhchivan.
According to the expert Vardan Voskanyan, there are two interconnected objectives: 1. The establishment of a direct railway communication between Turkey and Nakhchivan, bypassing Armenia, and 2. Reducing Armenia's influence on the Turkey-Azerbaijan 'corridor' to the minimum possible.
