Court Suspends Interim Authorities of Yerevan State University Rector

The Yerevan City General Jurisdiction Court has granted the application of Karen Hekimyan, the head of the Human Rights Defender NGO, and declared void the decision of the University Council No. 43, thereby suspending the authorities of Gagik Gevorgyan, the interim rector of Yerevan State University (YSU).

Karen Hekimyan announced the decision on his Facebook page: “On December 17, the Yerevan City General Jurisdiction Court approved my application and suspended the authorities of YSU’s interim rector, Gagik Gevorgyan (the basis being the inadmissibility of holding the position of interim rector while simultaneously serving as deputy chairman of Evocabank). Today, I learned from the press that he intends to appeal the court's decision. To be honest, I was surprised. What does Gevorgyan Gagik want to appeal? Whether he is working at Evocabank or not? Whether he is the interim rector of YSU or not? Or perhaps whether he is indeed Gagik Gevorgyan or someone else entirely? No, I do not oppose anyone’s right to appeal anything; however, I also stand for logic and common sense.

It is undeniable that Gagik Gevorgyan is employed at Evocabank (according to rumors in the air, he earns around 5-6 thousand dollars a month, excluding bonuses). It is undeniable that Gagik Gevorgyan has repeatedly stated that he does not aspire to the position of rector of YSU. It is undeniable that Gagik Gevorgyan, as an academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia (which also comes with significant financial compensation), may (and should) also engage in academic work. Considering the undeniable facts, I conclude that human illogicality and lack of common sense knows no bounds.

By the way, Gagik Gevorgyan is a mathematician.
