Biden Will Find It Difficult to Prevent Sanctions Against Turkey

The newly elected President of the United States, Joe Biden, will find it challenging to prevent the imposition of sanctions against Turkey by the U.S. legislature. This opinion was expressed by Tim Ash, a senior strategist at London’s BlueBay Asset Management, as reported by Ahval.

According to him, much will depend on the approach of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Erdoğan has angered many political figures in Washington by attacking Kurdish rebels in Syria and purchasing the S-400 air defense systems from Moscow. “Both parties in Washington disdain Erdoğan, and only Trump halted the imposition of sanctions,” Ash stated. “It will be difficult for Biden to stop Congress.”

However, he noted that there are many in a democratic society who appreciate Turkey’s geopolitical significance. “I’m not sure the Turks have even thought about how they are going to cope with Biden’s presidency,” Ash remarked. “Turkey can go in any direction.”
