Azerbaijan Continues Ethnic Cleansing and Depopulation Policy Against Artsakh: Armenian Foreign Ministry

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia has issued a statement on the occasion of the 31st anniversary of the anti-Armenian massacres in Baku.

“31 years ago, the international community witnessed another atrocity committed against the Armenian people in Azerbaijan. For days, the Armenian population, which was the cornerstone of Baku’s multicultural identity, faced brutal massacres and mass displacements. Hundreds were killed, crippled, or went missing, and tens of thousands became refugees. The anti-Armenian massacres in Baku in January 1990 marked the culmination of Azerbaijan’s depopulation process of Armenians.

The target of Azerbaijan’s anti-Armenian policies was not only the Armenian population that had lived and created in Baku for centuries but also the city’s Armenian historical and cultural heritage. Until today, the organizers and perpetrators of the anti-Armenian massacres in Baku have not been held accountable and continue to be celebrated as heroes.

Moreover, Azerbaijan continues this policy of ethnic cleansing and depopulation against Artsakh. A vivid example of this is the complete depopulation of the territories of Artsakh under Azerbaijani occupation, carried out through mass war crimes and ethnic cleansing.

Today, honoring the memory of the innocent victims of the anti-Armenian massacres in Baku, we once again emphasize the united commitment of the Republic of Armenia, the Republic of Artsakh, and the worldwide Armenian community to guarantee the right of the Armenian people to live freely, safely, and with dignity in their homeland.”
