New Coronavirus Variant Spreading Faster Than Any Other Known Strains
British scientists are attempting to ascertain whether a mutated strain of the coronavirus, which has rapidly spread in England over the past few days, may exhibit resistance to existing coronavirus vaccines. This was reported by Voice of America.
This new variant was identified on December 13 in Kent. According to scientists, it spreads more quickly than any other strains that have been identified to date.
In response to this issue, Prime Minister Boris Johnson convened an emergency meeting with government members. Concerning the VUI—202012/01 variant, he stated that "there are still many unknowns related to this type." He emphasized that this variant is 70% more transmissible than previous strains.
As a result, stricter measures are being implemented in the coming days. Pre-planned Christmas events have been canceled, and families in London and southern England are advised to celebrate the holidays without guests.
Experts have informed the World Health Organization about this new strain. However, they express satisfaction that this new variant has not been associated with a higher number of fatalities.
