794 Pieces of «Sig» Fish Seized
On December 10, 2020, staff from the Armenian Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources’ Biodiversity Control Department, the territorial divisions of Gegharkunik and Tavush, ‘Sevan AP’ SNCO, and the police conducted a joint preventive control measure at the ‘Sevan Patrol’ and ‘Dilijan Turn’ checkpoints. As a result, 794 pieces of ‘Sig’ fish, weighing a total of 234.9 kg, were seized in 7 documented incidents.
The seized fish have been handed over by officials of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources to the ‘Sevan Mental Health Center’ LLC and the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia.
These measures were carried out in accordance with the annual program for the restoration, preservation, reproduction, normal development, and use of the ecosystem of Lake Sevan, approved by decision N 1293-L of September 30, 2019. According to section 7 of the appendix, the contracts for the use of biological resources in Lake Sevan were set to be valid from March 15, 2020, to December 1, 2020, taking into account the spawning period of the ‘Ishkhan’ and ‘Sig’ fish species to ensure their natural reproduction.
The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources urges the public to refrain from illegal activities and to protect wildlife.
