Only 3-4 Houses Remain, All Others Burnt: Residents of Charakert Can Return but Have No Homes
In the Charakert village of the Shakhumyan region, which remains under Armenian control, only three families currently reside there as the other homes have been burned down, preventing their return.
The villagers set their houses on fire before the Shakhumyan region came under Azerbaijani control, and it was only after that they learned that their village would not be surrendered, as it had previously been part of the Martakert region.
Village head Kamo Tsakanian informed NEWS.am that the villagers have been notified that they can return to the village, but many now have no place to live. “Currently, three families are living in the village because there are 3-4 houses that weren't burned. All the other houses are completely burnt down. We have informed the villagers that they can return; it’s their choice. Even if they don’t come back, people from other villages will be coming, and the village will be populated,” the village head noted.
Previously, 48 families lived in the village, with a total population of 270. It should be noted that prior to the handover to Azerbaijan, people were burning their homes in the Shakhumyan region before surrendering it to the enemy.
