Russia to Ban Import of Apples and Tomatoes from Azerbaijan

Starting December 10, the Russian agricultural watchdog, Rosselkhoznadzor, will prohibit the import of tomatoes and apples from Azerbaijan due to the detection of pests in products from this country, as reported by RIA Novosti.

The agency notes that the Azerbaijani food safety authorities have been repeatedly informed about the systematic occurrences of quarantine objects found in their products. "Since October 22, 2020, there have been 17 recorded instances of quarantine objects being detected in products intended for the Eurasian Economic Union, specifically the South American tomato moth and the eastern fruit moth found in produce (tomatoes, apples)," the statement said.

"In connection with this, in order to maintain phytosanitary welfare and prevent the import and spread of these pests on the territory of the Russian Federation, Rosselkhoznadzor has no choice but to ban the import of tomatoes and apples originating from Azerbaijan starting December 10, 2020."
