"Heratsi" University Hospital Treats Over 300 Injured

Ardavazd Sahakyan, the "architect of the body," is currently fighting in the operating room. During the large-scale war unleashed by Azerbaijan and Turkey against Artsakh, over 300 injured have been operated on in the plastic surgery and micro-surgery clinic of "Heratsi" University Hospital, as reported by the hospital's information department.

Thanks to the coordinated team efforts of university specialists, including trauma surgeons, reanimatologists, maxillofacial surgeons, and urologists, hundreds of lives have been saved. For a month, the heads of the hospital's clinics have been working in a 20-24 hour shift mode. "The results are satisfactory; there were few deaths recorded, and the number of amputations is not high," stated the head of the plastic surgery and micro-surgery clinic.

Evaluating the significant work done by other clinics during these days, Ardavazd Sahakyan emphasized that comprehensive, functional rehabilitation for the injured requires phased treatment. "In the interest of our injured, including 18-20-year-old soldiers, officers, and civilians, I urge both university specialists and our colleagues from other medical centers to collaborate. Our compatriots injured during the war should not live with disabilities; we need to return them to a full life," said the experienced surgeon, adding that individuals and their relatives affected by the war have the right to be informed about which clinics they should continue their treatment in.

According to him, in the 1992-1994 Artsakh war, many individuals in Artsakh and Armenia were left with disabilities due to external aesthetic and functional issues. "During these days, I have consulted with my colleagues and believe that the university hospital is one of the best centers where the second phase of treatment can improve the quality of life for the surviving heroes," the surgeon emphasized, adding that a significant number of those injured by the weapons used by Azerbaijanis during this war have suffered mechanical injuries and extensive burns.

Highlighting the importance of the rehabilitation phase of treatment, Ardavazd Sahakyan referred to the unique Homeland Defender Rehabilitation Center in the region. "Based on my experience, I can say that the best surgery is doomed to failure if it is not followed by post-operative functional rehabilitation, which includes the joint work of psychologists, neurologists, and kinesiologists," noted the doctor, adding that post-operative treatment, especially related to neural junctions, must be conducted immediately.

The seasoned specialist, who has returned many patients affected by war and peacetime to full life, calls on the medical elite of the republic to unite around a single idea. "It is crucial to have the correct and timely diagnosis of patients and to set priorities. We continue to stay in touch with our foreign partners, using their consultations online; however, I must note that there is no need to transfer patients abroad," concluded Ardavazd Sahakyan, expressing hope that it will not take long to bring our heroic compatriots back on their feet.
