Armenian Military Prosecutor Discusses Issues of Armenian Prisoners of War with Human Rights Watch Representative
On November 27, the Armenian military prosecutor and deputy attorney general, V. Harutyunyan, met with Tanya Lokshina, a representative from the Europe and Central Asia division of the Human Rights Watch organization.
During the meeting, they addressed the criminal cases related to the aggressive war unleashed and conducted against the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Artsakh by using mercenaries and armed forces recruited in advance by the military-political leadership of the Republic of Azerbaijan, as well as the use of prohibited methods and means of warfare.
The parties also discussed the cases concerning the murder and torture of Armenian prisoners of war and civilians captured by the armed forces of Azerbaijan, along with the incidents of inhumane and degrading treatment towards them during the hostilities.
The military prosecutor emphasized the importance of informing international human rights and concerned civic organizations about the brutal actions carried out against Armenian prisoners of war and civilians in Azerbaijan, as well as the necessity of providing additional guarantees for the protection of the rights of the victims, highlighting the significant role that international organizations and reputable human rights NGOs should play in preventing further criminal offenses against them.
Ms. Lokshina expressed particular concern regarding the use of unacceptable types of weaponry during the hostilities and showed a willingness to assist in protecting the rights of individuals affected by the military actions within her authority.
Both sides reached an agreement to continue their future cooperation.
