A Border Between Armenia and Azerbaijan Established Instead of Former Border with Artsakh, Says Armenian Ministry of Defense
Armenian units were withdrawn from the Karvachar region on November 25, in accordance with the provisions of the trilateral agreement signed by the Prime Minister of Armenia, and the Presidents of Russia and Azerbaijan, transferring control of the area to Azerbaijan. This has resulted in the establishment of a border between Armenia and Azerbaijan instead of the former border with Artsakh.
The Office of the Prime Minister of Armenia informed Armenpress about this.
"On November 9, the trilateral statement signed by the Prime Minister of Armenia, and the Presidents of Russia and Azerbaijan established that the Karvachar region of the Republic of Artsakh must come under the control of the Republic of Azerbaijan by November 15. Subsequently, due to the tight deadlines for implementing the process, the deadline was extended to November 25. On that day, Armenian units were withdrawn from the Karvachar region, which, according to the provisions of the statement, has passed to Azerbaijan, resulting in the formation of a border between Armenia and Azerbaijan instead of the former border with Artsakh.
Temporary gates have been installed in the specified area between Armenia and Azerbaijan to halt traffic in both directions until a complete and accurate demarcation of the border can be carried out.
Today, demarcation works have commenced with the participation of representatives from the armed forces of Armenia, Russia, and Azerbaijan, using special tools (GPS). Part of the demarcation works is being conducted in the section of the Sotk mine that was part of the Karvachar region of the Republic of Artsakh.
Accurate and complete demarcation is extremely important to eliminate disputes regarding the ownership of certain sections of the border or possible future provocations. It is also noted that the armed forces of Armenia and Azerbaijan will deploy their combat positions and carry out combat duty based on the borders established as a result of the demarcation," the statement said.
