820 Syrian Mercenaries Transferred to Azerbaijan and Engaged in Military Operations
Turkish private military companies, with the support of Ankara, are recruiting mercenaries in Syria to send to the conflict zone in Nagorno-Karabakh and participate in military operations on behalf of Azerbaijan. This was reported by the Russian media outlet РБК.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has documented the transfer of at least 850 soldiers to Azerbaijan. On September 29, the center reported that the number of militants amounted to 320, but an additional 520 individuals were transferred to the conflict zone within just one day.
“Most of the mercenaries are Syrian Turkmen and representatives of the Turkish population in northern Syria. Arab groups supporting Ankara have refused to provide combatants,” the center reported.
In addition, РБК notes that the observatory also reports the transfer of fighters from the Armenian diaspora in Syria to the conflict zone, although it does not clarify how many individuals are involved.
It has been noted that during the fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh, three mercenaries fighting on Azerbaijan's side have already been killed.
