We Must Avoid Spreading False Information: Georgian Armenian Scholar on Weapons Transfer Through Georgia

On September 28, anti-Georgian sentiments began circulating on Armenian social media. Some users accused Georgia of preventing Russian weapons from being delivered to Armenia through its territory, while also claiming that Georgia is assisting Azerbaijan in receiving weapons from Israel.

Lela Jojelava, an Armenian scholar and lecturer at Tbilisi State University, stated in an interview with Alik Media that disseminating such information is unacceptable. “This absolutely does not correspond to reality. Today, the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict is not just at the border but also in cyberspace; this is an information war. We must avoid spreading false information. We all know Georgia's position well,” Jojelava said.

It is noteworthy that in July of this year, during the border clashes in Tavush, Azerbaijani media reported that “Armenia has received weapons from Serbia through Georgia in order to conduct military operations against Azerbaijan,” which was later denied by official Tbilisi. The Georgian Foreign Ministry stated that the article aimed to artificially create problems between the two strategic partners.

The article also mentioned that Armenia received weapons from Russia through Georgia in recent days. It discussed Kamaz vehicles that allegedly carried military materials. The article claimed that these weapons were used by Armenia to fire upon Azerbaijani villages, a statement refuted by official Yerevan.

Following this publication, Aliyev dismissed Azerbaijan’s ambassador to Serbia, against whom criminal proceedings were initiated later. Simultaneously, Baku changed its ambassador in Georgia.

Moreover, it should be noted that just days before the fighting that began along the Artsakh-Azerbaijan contact line on the morning of September 27, Ilham Aliyev expressed gratitude to the Georgian government for “not allowing the transfer of weapons to Armenia,” a statement that was also not confirmed by official Tbilisi.
