Faculty Members of Armenian State University Hold Protest in Front of Government, MP Mikael Melkumyan Participates

The collective of the Armenian State University of Economics has organized a protest in front of the Armenian government. One of the committee members stated, "We have no political demands; we want our legally elected rector to be appointed to the position." He mentioned that they will remain in front of the government until someone from the government approaches them.

Also participating in the protest is Mikael Melkumyan, a member of the National Assembly from the Prosperous Armenia faction, who also teaches at the university.

According to the committee, the Armenian State University of Economics has been governed by acting rectors for nearly two years. "In May 2020, the Ministry of Education and Science finally announced a competition for the vacant rector position at the Armenian State University of Economics. On July 17, during the competition, Diana Galoyan was elected as rector with a two-thirds majority from the council members of the university. According to Article 15, Part 4 of the Law on Higher and Postgraduate Professional Education, the government approves the results of the rector's election, which still has not been carried out more than two months after the election. This situation deepens the uncertainty surrounding the university, serving as a cause for a crisis. The university's scientific council has addressed both the Minister of Education and the Government of Armenia regarding this issue, but has received no response," the statement issued by the committee reads.
