Lebanon Needs a 'Strong Restart' to Restore Citizens' Trust, Germany Says
To restore citizens' trust, Lebanon needs a 'strong restart' and economic reforms, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas stated before his visit to Beirut, according to AP.
According to him, he will visit the Lebanese capital to gather information on the situation following the devastating explosion and to express condolences and support.
Germany has promised to provide an immediate 20 million euros in aid following the catastrophic blast in Beirut on August 4, which claimed the lives of more than 170 people. Thousands of buildings in the center of Beirut have been destroyed, and many have been left homeless.
Maas said he would conduct talks in Beirut to ensure that aid reaches those who need it. He noted that he would discuss Lebanon's future with the country's political leaders and representatives of civil society. 'The country now needs a serious restart and far-reaching economic reforms. Only in this way can Lebanon create a good future for its youth. This is the only way to gain trust,' he said.
