Anna Naghdalyan's Commentary on Turkey's Foreign Ministry Statement
The statement by Turkey's Foreign Ministry in relation to the centenary of the Treaty of Sèvres once again highlights that country's inability to confront its past. This was noted by Anna Naghdalyan, the spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry.
“It is astonishing that the current Turkish government, which does not miss an opportunity to value the Ottoman legacy, exhibits such a nervous reaction to the mention of the Sèvres Treaty signed with several countries, including the Republic of Armenia, by the same Ottoman Empire. The Treaty of Sèvres was, is, and will remain a historical fact that cannot be rewritten or erased.
Turkey, by avoiding facing its past and calling on others to ‘learn lessons from history instead of fostering animosity,’ continues its traditional policy of justifying the Armenian Genocide and threatening the Armenian people with new atrocities. Turkey's actions aimed at destabilizing peace and security in our region and its belligerent stance towards Armenia are part of the current government's expansionist policy, which destabilizes neighboring regions.
Only a revision of this policy and Turkey's ability to confront its past will pave the way for real peace among the peoples of our region,” she stated.
