OMON Forces Approaching Central Minsk as Arrests Begin in the City
Arrests are taking place in Minsk. According to RIA Novosti, strengthened units of the police and OMON are approaching the "Minsk, Hero City" monument. Law enforcement officers, who have cordoned off the central streets of the capital, are thoroughly checking journalists' documents. Metal barriers have been installed in the area.
Special equipment from security forces is also approaching the city center. Mobile phone connectivity is being disrupted throughout the city. According to sources, the situation remains calm for now, with no large gatherings reported.
It is worth noting that mass protests began in major cities of Belarus following the presidential elections held the previous day. Security forces have used flash-bang grenades and tear gas to disperse the crowds. Around 3,000 people were detained the day before. According to the results of the presidential elections, the incumbent president Alexander Lukashenko won with 80.08 percent of the votes.
