Mass Protests Erupt in Beirut After Powerful Explosion; Police Use Tear Gas

WRed

Residents of Lebanon's capital, Beirut, are currently staging large protests demanding answers from the authorities regarding the horrific explosion that occurred at the port days ago.

It is noteworthy that the tragic incident has sparked increasing anger and discontent against the government, which has admitted that the devastating explosion was, in fact, predictable and that continuous warnings had been issued about it. The vast quantity of ammonium nitrate (2750 tons) that caused the explosion was stored at the Beirut port for six years, described as a 'floating bomb.' Remarkably, officials who inspected the facility six months ago warned that if it were not removed, it would 'explode the whole of Beirut.'

Additionally, the public was already dissatisfied with the government due to the ongoing economic crisis, which has forced almost half of Lebanon's population into poverty.

The Lebanese police have deployed tear gas to disperse the protesters.

Details are available in the video.
