Swimming is Advised Against: Toxicological Studies Conducted in the Sevan Lake Area

With the activation of blue-green algae in Lake Sevan, the Ministry of Health has conducted preliminary toxicological studies on the water quality of the coastal areas, resulting in no detected changes indicative of acute toxic effects.

This was reported by the Ministry of Health.

“Despite this, as algae are living organisms, they can move and change the ratio of species depending on air and water temperature, wind direction and strength. Certain species produce toxins that adversely affect the health of animals and humans, to which people may be exposed through drinking 'blooma' water, swimming in it, or inadvertently ingesting it. To avoid health issues, the Ministry of Health advises caution, prohibits children from swimming in unauthorized areas, and urges individuals to seek medical attention promptly in case of symptoms such as eye irritation, rashes, and particularly around the mouth and nose, skin irritation, allergic reactions, or other symptoms. Monitoring of water quality related to blue-green algae activation in Lake Sevan is ongoing,” the ministry reports.
