We Must Help Resolve the Long-Standing Conflict Between the Two Countries Peacefully: Algimantas Dumbrava
The Member of the Parliament of Lithuania, a member of the ruling Farmers and Greens Union, and Vice President of the Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group with Armenia, Algimantas Dumbrava, has commented on the aggression unleashed by Azerbaijan along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border on his Facebook page. Here is his statement:
“As a member of the commission on inter-parliamentary relations with the Republic of Armenia, I am closely following the events occurring along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border with great concern. My sincere condolences go out to the families of the victims.
In October 2019, as a member of the official parliamentary delegation, I visited the Republic of Armenia. I can firmly state that the Armenian people have not forgotten Lithuania’s kind gesture when it was the first to recognize Armenia’s independence. During the visit, we constantly heard words of gratitude and admiration directed towards Lithuania. Recently, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of our cooperation.
I believe that even during this tumultuous time for the South Caucasus, Lithuania will not stand aside and will seek peaceful resolutions to the conflict. First and foremost, the parties to the conflict must come to the negotiation table. I understand this is not an easy task, but it is a prerequisite for positive outcomes. The members of the OSCE Minsk Group — the USA, France, and Russia — should support the parties. I want to remind that both Armenia and Azerbaijan are members of the Eastern Partnership, which Lithuania actively supports. I believe we must all unite and help find a peaceful resolution to the years-long conflict between the two countries, for the sake of a peaceful and happy future for their children.”
For your information, it is noted at the end of the statement that it is a political advertisement, which is required by Lithuanian law due to his candidacy for the upcoming parliamentary elections. According to Lithuanian legislation, candidates are required to include such a note when making political statements during the election period.
