Baroness Calls on UK Foreign Secretary to Condemn Azerbaijani Aggression

Member of the House of Lords in the UK Parliament, Baroness Caroline Cox, has sent a letter to UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab regarding the tension at the Armenia-Azerbaijan border. Cox has called for a firm stance on Azerbaijani aggression.

“I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the serious threat of escalation of the conflict at the Armenia-Azerbaijan border, a matter of particular apprehension during the pandemic. In recent days, Azerbaijan has deployed artillery near the civilian population of Tavush, in northeastern Armenia, targeting regions to the north of Nagorno-Karabakh. On July 14, four Armenian sergeants and officers were killed. Ten servicemen are receiving medical assistance, one of whom remains in a critical condition,” Cox wrote.

“I am alarmed by the attack on the kindergarten in the Aygepar village of the Tavush region, as well as reports that the Azerbaijani Minister of Defense has called for the mass extermination of the Armenian population and threatened to target Armenia's nuclear power plant,” noted Caroline Cox.

The House of Lords member also referenced a large protest in Baku, where anti-Armenian chants of “Death to Armenians” were heard. “Given the United Kingdom’s long-standing commitment to working with the government of Armenia and international partners to ensure regional security, I urge you to take a resolute position in condemning this threat to peace, to take immediate steps to promote de-escalation of the conflict, and to support Armenia in its efforts to defend its territorial integrity,” Cox wrote.
