The Governor on Vardavar

Armenia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Governor Tigran Avinyan shared on his Facebook page:

“Dear compatriots, this Sunday, July 19, is the celebration of Vardavar, or the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ. We all look forward to Vardavar. It is one of the most beloved holidays among the people, celebrated with unique enthusiasm in our backyards and public places, without distinguishing between friends, relatives, acquaintances, or strangers. The tradition of splashing water on each other and releasing doves symbolizes the great flood and humanity's salvation from it.

Unfortunately, this year’s “flood,” the coronavirus pandemic, is still not retreating, and we continue to wage an unyielding battle against it. I am confident that we all understand that holding an event like Vardavar will create fertile ground for the intensive spread of the virus, leading to a significant increase in the number of infected individuals in the coming days. This would create risks for public health, cause tension in our overburdened healthcare system, and disrupt the existing balance.

Therefore, I urge and encourage everyone to refrain from the temptation to celebrate Vardavar in the traditional manner, to avoid crowded places, and to refrain from events that imply large gatherings.

I also inform you that the Police will conduct enhanced monitoring in public areas to prevent such gatherings.

Dear people, I understand that we all want to return to our previous way of life as soon as possible, but in the current circumstances, the only way to ensure the safety and health of ourselves and our loved ones is to adhere to the established regulations. Rest assured that with continuous discipline, we will be able to return to the normal rhythm of our lives sooner.

During these days, our army is defending the borders of our homeland from the encroachments of the adversary with high professionalism and great dedication. We, in turn, must defend the “internal borders” against the coronavirus pandemic with high discipline and responsibility. Health and vigilance to all of us, together we will overcome all difficulties!”
