Azerbaijan's Military-Political Elite Faces Two Paths: Marukyan
The head of the Bright Armenia faction in the National Assembly, Edmon Marukyan, wrote on his Facebook page: 'The Azerbaijani military-political elite has pushed itself into a corner and found itself in a foolish situation. Firstly, by resorting to provocations, they attacked the state border of Armenia, trying to gain some advantage and turning it into an object for internal consumption to cover up numerous domestic problems. The provocation has faced a fiasco, after which the Azerbaijani authorities organized mass demonstrations demanding war in Baku, which have shown signs of transforming into anti-government protests.
Now the Azerbaijani military-political elite stands at a crossroads, both fraught with the risk of overthrowing the government. If they start a war, it will be short-lived and end with their disgraceful defeat, resulting in the overthrow of the current military-political elite. If they do not start a war after the unleashed provocation and unprecedented losses, then once again the military-political leadership will be overthrown under legitimate demands for accountability and resignations. It seems there is no way out, but I believe there is a solution. The way out lies in the fact that the Azerbaijani authorities must cease fire and apologize to both their people and the Armenian nation. As for the current oppressive, nepotistic elite, their downfall is just a matter of time. Their dishonorable end is inevitable.'
