Incidents of Violence Against Government Representatives Have Increased

In the period from January to May 2020, a total of 10,777 crimes were registered in Armenia, which is an increase of 348 compared to the same time last year. The majority of these crimes, 5,614, were recorded in the capital city of Yerevan.

This information comes from data published by the Statistical Committee of the Republic of Armenia. Among the regions, the highest number of crimes was registered in Kotayk Province with 869 cases, while Vayots Dzor Province reported the least, with 82.

The number of murders has increased by one. In the period from January to May 2020, there were 21 murders, compared to 20 in the preceding year. Violations of road traffic and transportation operation regulations decreased from 548 to 477, including a reduction in fatal accidents, which dropped from 89 in January to May 2019 to 65 in the same period of 2020.

Cases of personal property theft have increased, with 5,026 thefts reported in the first five months of 2020, compared to 4,857 in the same period of 2019. Crimes against state authority, service, and governance decreased; from 1,433 cases in January to May 2019 to 1,279 in the same timeframe this year.

However, incidents of abuse of official authority have risen from 143 to 213. There has also been a nearly twofold increase in incidents of violence against government representatives, from 14 to 27. Notably, the recorded cases of bribery, both receiving and offering, as well as mediation in bribery have significantly decreased, from 164 to 87.
