WHO Recommends Use of Remdesivir in Fight Against Coronavirus

The World Health Organization has identified remdesivir as the only drug that has proven its efficacy during trials in the fight against the coronavirus. This was reported by the BBC.

According to the organization's chief scientist, Soumya Swaminathan, the drug has been effective in treating patients who did not experience severe illness. In particular, thanks to remdesivir, it has been possible to reduce the number of hospitalization cases and increase the average recovery speed of patients. Swaminathan noted that infected patients who received remdesivir recovered in 11 days, while those who did not take the drug recovered in 15 days.

At the same time, Swaminathan emphasized that the use of the drug does not help reduce mortality rates from the coronavirus disease. Originally developed for the treatment of Ebola fever, it did not prove its effectiveness for that purpose. However, it was later successfully used for the treatment of several respiratory diseases, including SARS and MERS.
