Most New Coronavirus Cases in Georgia Are Among Freight Drivers

In Georgia, 8 new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in the last day, of which 6 are among international freight transport drivers. This was reported by Aliq.ge.

The medical director of Tbilisi’s infectious diseases hospital, Marina Ezugbaian, told reporters, “One of the 8 patients is a contact case, while the remaining 7 are imported cases, of which 6 are truck drivers and one is another citizen.”

Four of the infected individuals have been hospitalized in Tbilisi’s infectious hospital. Two of them are citizens of Azerbaijan and one is from Belarus.

“All four men exhibited high fever upon crossing the border and were transferred to a clinic. Rapid tests conducted on-site confirmed the infection,” Ezugbaian noted.

According to the regulations in place in Georgia, those engaged in international freight transport undergo a rapid test at the Georgian border. If the result is positive, they are sent to hospital for PCR testing.

International freight transporters have become the main source of viral transmission into the country. In June alone, the virus was confirmed in 30 drivers.
