Destruction of Rule of Law Under the Guise of Democracy in Armenia’s National Assembly, Says Avetik Ishkhanian

Currently, in the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia, the destruction of the rule of law is taking place under the guise of democracy. This was stated in a Facebook post by human rights defender Avetik Ishkhanian.

He wrote: "Thus, in the so-called new Armenia, the Prime Minister, taking advantage of the pandemic situation, is executing an unconstitutional coup by instructing and threatening his 88 toy deputies, disregarding international obligations. If this unconstitutional, illegal draft becomes law, the so-called new Armenia will actually be thrown back into the depths of the Middle Ages, with its provincial monarch. The opportunity to save the situation lies with two opposition factions. If these factions do not jointly appeal to the Constitutional Court, they will equally bear responsibility to future generations alongside the My Step faction, and no justification or explanation will be acceptable. Moreover, members of these factions will no longer have the moral right to speak about any values. If they fail to appeal to the Constitutional Court, we can conclude: "Prosperous Armenia" + "Bright Armenia" = "Subjugated Armenia" faction."

The National Assembly adopted the draft amendments to the Constitution in the first reading in an hour and a half.
