Mher Aghajanyan Elected as the Chief Prosecutor of Artsakh
On June 9, the National Assembly of the Republic of Artsakh convened an extraordinary session, headed by Arthur Tovmasyan. In accordance with part 2 of Article 114 of the Constitution of the Republic of Artsakh and part 1 of Article 40 of the Law on the Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly, the issue of electing the Chief Prosecutor of the Republic of Artsakh was put to discussion at the initiative of the President of Artsakh.
During the discussion, the official representative of the President of Artsakh and the head of the government affairs management of the presidential administration, Arayik Lazaryan, presented the biography of the Chief Prosecutor candidate Mher Aghajanyan and proposed him for election to the position of Chief Prosecutor.
Speaking about his programmatic provisions, Mher Aghajanyan emphasized that in order to ensure public trust and support, they would operate in a more public and transparent manner while maintaining the confidentiality of preliminary investigations and the presumption of innocence.
Referring to the results of discussions in parliamentary groups, the candidate stated, “The suggestions made in the factions have been taken into account, and I assure you that should I receive your vote, I will pursue the implementation of the programs I presented for the benefit of the Republic of Artsakh and the welfare of the Armenian people.”
Members of parliament posed questions to the candidate. During the exchange of views, the positions of their factions were expressed by Gegham Stepanyan (Democratic Party of Artsakh), Arthur Mosiayan (Armenian Revolutionary Federation), and Arthur Harutyunyan (Free Homeland).
The parliament proceeded to vote. Presenting the results, the chairman of the counting commission, Eduard Aghabekyan, noted that the ballots in the ballot box were distributed with a ratio of 30 in favor and 3 against. Parliamentary leader Arthur Tovmasyan congratulated Mher Aghajanyan on his election as Chief Prosecutor and wished him fruitful work.
According to the Law on the Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly, the swearing-in ceremony for the newly elected Chief Prosecutor took place. Continuing the session's work, the Chairman of the National Assembly announced the change in the leadership of the United Homeland faction on May 24, with Marsel Petrosyan elected as the faction leader and Davit Baghdasaryan as the secretary.
