Environmental Disaster in the Norilsk River of Krasnoyarsk Region

An environmental disaster has occurred in the Norilsk River of the Krasnoyarsk region, where over 20 tons of diesel fuel have spilled from a nearby hydroelectric station. It has been reported that even if efforts are successful in cleaning the water resource from the fuel, it will take decades, and billions of rubles will be required for the remediation.

The governor of Krasnoyarsk has stated that information about the major accident was first learned through photographs shared on social media. Clean-up operations are ongoing in the river, but the pollution area exceeds 180,000 square meters, and the concentration of toxic substances in the water has increased tenfold.
