In Armenia, Women Still Need to Be Informed That They Have Rights: Zourabyan
Naira Zourabyan was surprised when it was said in parliament that women need to be informed that they have rights, with some MPs opposing this as degrading.
During the discussion of the annual report of the Human Rights Defender, she raised the question of whether there are women in Armenia who need to be taught that they have rights. She also cited the issue of domestic violence and particularly the disturbing trend of women not speaking out about it.
Zourabyan noted that she has approached the police and received a response indicating that the number of applications from women has only increased slightly since the adoption of the domestic violence prevention law. Accordingly, the MP insists that attitudes must change and people's mentality needs to be transformed.
