Mahatma Gandhi's Statue to Be Installed in Yerevan

A statue of Mahatma Gandhi is set to be installed in the public park located between Halabyan and Margaryan streets in Yerevan. This project is included in the agenda of the Yerevan City Council meeting scheduled for April 28.

The Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent a letter to the Mayor of Yerevan proposing the installation of the statue to commemorate the 150th anniversary of India's spiritual leader, legendary political figure, and philosopher Mahatma Gandhi. The initiative aims to strengthen and deepen the friendly relations between Armenia and India.

The letter also indicates that the statue will be provided by the Indian side, which will cover all expenses related to the statue's transportation to Yerevan, the construction of the pedestal, and its installation.

Mahatma Gandhi was one of the leaders and ideologues of India's struggle for independence from Great Britain. He chose nonviolent resistance as his means of struggle, advocating for a fight without hatred or gunfire, where the only weapon of the people was their own lives. The world recognized the effectiveness of Gandhi's philosophy when India peacefully gained independence from Britain in 1947 due to his relentless efforts.

October 2, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, is celebrated as a national holiday in India and is observed worldwide as the International Day of Non-Violence.

The proposal from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been approved by Yerevan's chief architect and the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, and has also been coordinated with the Department of External Relations.
