Video: Marukyan Proposes Permitting Outdoor Construction Work

Hundreds of people have been protesting recently, claiming that the ban on work has made it difficult for them to earn a living. Many are involved in construction. This was stated today, April 5, by Edmon Marukyan, the leader of the Bright Armenia faction in the National Assembly, during a Facebook live session.

According to him, there are ongoing construction projects in the capital and regions, and they were expecting a construction boom. However, everything is currently at a standstill.

“Construction can be either open or closed. Closed construction happens indoors, where there is a high likelihood of people infecting one another. However, as you can see here, this is open construction. Why not allow people to work? I believe that in this case, we can grant permission for people to work, placing clear responsibilities on the employer to monitor everyone’s entrance, check their temperatures, and use the appropriate disinfectants,” the MP stated.

He noted that there is currently a construction site where only 2 people are working per 100 square meters, questioning why they should not be permitted to work. “I know of numerous construction projects that are at a standstill,” he said.

According to him, more than 1,000 people are involved in several construction projects in Yerevan, and there are families that depend on this income.

“March has ended, and there are construction companies that have paid salaries despite experiencing losses. Now it is April, and if outdoor construction is not allowed, these companies will either take loans to pay their employees or will have to lay them off. This is not a solution; we need to examine the sector case by case. I believe that this type of open construction is a very good example and should be allowed under strict supervision,” he concluded.
