Hayk Marutyan's Sharp Response: It is At Least Immoral to Gather Political Dividends from Our Senior Citizens

“If you are not doing anything, just stay at home, because scientists have discovered that even kind people are affected by this virus.” This was stated by Yerevan Mayor Hayk Marutyan on his Facebook page, responding to media and members of opposition factions in the council who have raised alarms about his isolation since the spread of the coronavirus.

According to Marutyan, every politician acts in their own way: “If you’ve noticed, I don’t go live often; as a mayor, I’ve gone live only 4-5 times, just to comment on various types of gossip. But to follow the logic of these people means that if I’ve gone live only 4-5 days in 1.5 years, does that mean I’ve only worked those 4-5 days and done nothing the rest of the time? After this, I won’t be going live anymore; this is my style of working.”

Marutyan also commented, “Today, there was a statement asking why we are not looking after our elderly citizens. What are we doing? I believe that in these difficult days, it is at least immoral to gather political dividends from our senior citizens.”

The mayor announced that he, along with his wife and friends, has distributed food packages to 1,300 elderly individuals living alone to ensure that these people do not leave their homes during the month and are not at risk of contracting the coronavirus.

Hayk Marutyan demonstrated the new location of the waste management and cleaning facility in a live broadcast on his Facebook page. The mayor stated that a meeting was held today under the leadership of the Prime Minister, during which two issues were discussed: “Very specific steps will be taken regarding the new subway station, and a road will be constructed that will connect Isakov Avenue to Arshakunyats Avenue. Monte Melkonyan Street will continue and come out near Komitas Park. Concrete design work is ongoing, and we will work to start construction by the end of the year. Depots will also be built so that when buses arrive, our new transport network will be operational.”
