Russia Develops Drug Against Coronavirus: РИА Новости
The Federal Biomedical Agency of Russia has presented a drug for the treatment of coronavirus infection, developed based on the anti-malaria medication known as ‘Mefloquine’. This was reported by РИА Новости.
According to the announcement, the ‘Pharmaprotection’ scientific production center took into account both Chinese and French experience in developing the treatment regimen. ‘The highly selective drug blocks the cytopathic effect of the coronavirus in cells and hinders its reproduction, while the effect of ‘Mefloquine’ prevents the activation of inflammatory processes caused by the virus,’ stated Veronica Skvortsova, head of the Federal Biomedical Agency.
She emphasized that this will ensure effective treatment for patients with varying degrees of severity from COVID-19. The agency's press service reported that an effective and safe scheme for the prevention of coronavirus is also being developed based on ‘Mefloquine.’
