Strict Quarantine Regime Established in Several Regions of Georgia

In the Marneuli and Bolnisi regions of the Kvemo Kartli province, inhabited predominantly by Azerbaijanis, a strict quarantine regime has been established. This information was reported by netgazeti.ge, citing the Prime Minister of Georgia, Giorgi Gakharia.

"The government was forced to make the decision to place the Marneuli and Bolnisi regions under a strict quarantine regime," stated Prime Minister Gakharia.

Gakharia informed that currently, the number of infected individuals in Georgia is 54, with 3,254 people in quarantine. "On March 21, a state of emergency was declared in the country. Today, we have a severe case, an infected woman in Marneuli, whose source of infection has not been identified. Thus, the internal transmission phase of the coronavirus has begun in the country. According to our epidemiologists, the transmission of the disease occurred during an event attended by dozens of people. The situation is serious, and this is a global issue. We describe the current situation as a transition to a new phase—the internal transmission phase, and we are prepared for this," Gakharia stated.

It is known that worldwide, the number of coronavirus infections has surpassed 338,000, with more than 14,000 deaths and over 99,000 recoveries. Chinese authorities had informed the World Health Organization about the outbreak of the unknown type of infection on December 31.
