Tigran Mukuchyan is in the National Assembly: A Closed Session is Taking Place
A closed session is currently underway in the National Assembly. Present is the chairman of the Central Electoral Commission, Tigran Mukuchyan. According to 24News, the CEC chairman has been invited to discuss matters related to the changes in the Electoral Code, following the invitation of the working group established for this purpose.
"The discussion has no connection to the upcoming referendum. Specific issues related to the elections of Local Self-Government Bodies are being addressed, particularly the question of conducting elections through a proportional representation system in relatively small communities as well," the media outlet reports.
It is noteworthy that under the proposed changes, in addition to the cities of Yerevan, Vanadzor, and Gjumri, proportional elections will also be held in communities with more than 4,000 voters.
Alongside representatives of the working group and the chairman of the Central Electoral Commission, representatives from various civic organizations are also present at the discussion, who are reportedly concerned about the proposed changes regarding local self-government elections. "NGOs oppose the idea that the elections should solely be represented by parties. They argue that it should be possible for NGOs to participate in the elections as well, meaning they should also have the opportunity to submit lists just like the political parties," the source noted.
