Prime Minister Prevents Young Man's Suicide Attempt After He Swallowed a Razor

The newspaper 'Armenian Time' reports that on the evening of March 7, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan prevented a 24-year-old man's suicide near the 'Victory' Bridge in Yerevan while returning from a regional tour. Today we learned that the Prime Minister transported him to the 'Nairi' medical center in his car.

It was also revealed that just hours earlier, around 1:10 PM on March 7, the young man had attempted to end his life again, this time from the Davtashen Bridge. His suicide attempt was thwarted by the police patrolling the area.

At the 'Victory' Bridge, the young man was found to be in a life-threatening condition, having swallowed a razor, while simultaneously attempting to jump off the bridge. By the time Prime Minister Pashinyan noticed him, the young man's health was already deteriorating.

The Prime Minister intervened to prevent the suicide attempt and transported the young man to a medical facility.

According to the patient, he had swallowed a razor. Investigations revealed that there was a foreign object in his stomach. Fortunately, it was possible to remove the razor using gastroscopy without the intervention of surgeons, said Anatoli Gnuni, the director of the 'Nairi' medical center.

After the medical intervention to remove the foreign object, the young man remained in the hospital that night, but the next day, March 8, he submitted a request and left.

We inquired with Gnuni whether the young man underwent any further assessments and what health issues he had. He noted, 'The boy was about 23-24 years old. I cannot say whether he has mental health problems, but generally, such attempts are made by those with psychological issues. However, since we do not have a psychological or psychiatric department, I cannot say for certain.'

The young man who attempted suicide had been living for several months at the government-supported Center for the Care of Elderly and Disabled Individuals in Domestic Conditions under the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs of Armenia. He was provided accommodation there as an exception.

'Armenian Time' visited the mentioned facility, but the young man was not there. Director Lilit Agajanyan stated that since the incident, they have been unable to locate him. According to her, his phone fell out of his pocket while he was hanging from the bridge.
